Recognizing basic shapes is a fundamental requirement of being prepared for school. Beyond recognition, identifying shapes in real world environments will help your child become familiar with shapes in even more fundamental ways. Playing "spot the shapes" is an easy way to start this recognition process.
Being able to recognize shapes is a basic concept and one of the stepping stones for counting and math. While describing what makes a triangle and square different, emphasize the number of sides each shape has. Count out those sides; discuss the length and what makes each shape so special.
Free-form drawing of shapes isn't required for children this young, but tracing shapes with marker or color pencil is an easy activity you can do at home.
