Happy New Year to all! My resolution this year is to begin working on my reading licensure. As a product developer and an ex-teacher, I thought I knew a lot about learning to read and the pedagogies behind reading. Since working on the Capstone Literacy Center with Dr. Andy Johnson from Minnesota State University, Mankato, I realized that I really don’t know all that much after all!
My first class at Minnesota State University, Mankato, is “Preparing All Students to Read” in which I will be exposed to research-based knowledge and evidence related to current issues in literacy development for P-16 schools and environments. The text books I will read are: Phonics they use: Words for reading and Writing 6e by Patricia Cunningham and Teaching for comprehending and fluency K-8 by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell.
I’m excited to start my coursework. Do you have any suggestions for me on my path to getting my reading licensure?
