Do you remember those old “hair club for men” commercials? The phrase I’m remembering is “I’m not only the hair club president, I’m also a client.” It doesn’t sound like it should fit, but that phrase kind of applies to my job at Capstone. “Hi, my name is Bobbie Nuytten, I’m not only a senior designer at Capstone Publishers, I also have a house full of Capstone books!”
It might help you to know a little bit more about me, like the fact that I have two little girls (3 and 1.5) who are avid readers… well, maybe “avid” isn’t the best descriptor. They will sleep with books if I let them… when I bring home new books it beats candy or ice cream every time. I should also add that I love books almost as much as they do, or possibly more-so depending on what I happen to be reading at any given time.
The great thing, or the thing that annoys my husband most about our enthusiasm (re: "obsession" to my hubby) for books and my job here at Capstone is that every season my coworkers and I create more captivating, amazing, and informative books. Every season gets better! We push more design boundaries, we find more interesting topics, we look at the “same-old, same-old” in new and fun ways. I’m in the front lines, so I get to see the concepts and product before ANYONE. I also get to order from the newest catalogs as soon as they are out – heck, I get to check through the catalog before it’s even printed!
The very best part about the whole situation is that I love the books that I work on and so do my girls. I am so excited to share them with my family that I just framed press proof covers of an endangered animals series that I designed recently (Endangered and Threatened Animals – see a few of the covers below) and am about to hang them up in my 1.5 year old’s room! But I do have to admit, my enthusiasm has run a bit rampant beyond the pre-K level of books that are perfect for our family right now. My kids will have plenty of years to grow into the Signature Lives, Kids Dish Cookbooks, Global Connections, and tons of other books that I’ve collected for them over the years!
