The 89th annual Academy Awards aired last night. If you’re anything like me, you were glued to the TV from start to finish. I love it all—the glitz and glamour, who wore what, who said what, and who tripped on the red carpet. (I’m looking at you, Jennifer Lawrence!)
But my favorite part has always been the speeches. What will the winners say before the exit music starts? As someone who has always been fascinated with word choice, it’s interesting how a few strung-together words can make the difference between an eloquent, powerful acceptance speech and a jumbled-up mess. My favorite speech of the night was from Lupita Nyong’o, who won for Best Supporting Actress.
This year’s show was extra special for me. For the first time, I left my comfy spot on the couch and enjoyed all things Oscar with others in the community. The Oscar bash I attended supported the Creative Play Place, a local organization that provides a free place for kids to learn and play. One of the organizers for the event was Capstone’s own Julie Gassman! As the main event played on large TVs, Julie and the other event planners had drawings, Oscar bingo, and even costume contests for those who dressed in their Oscar best. If you missed the Academy Awards this year, don’t worry. There is plenty of time for you and the kids to get into the Hollywood spirit before next year’s show rolls around. Capstone can help with some great books about all the things kids love about the movies. Check them out!
