Last week I, along with Creative Director Heather Kindseth, Managing Editor Donnie Lemke, and Editorial Director Michael Dahl, attended San Diego Comic Con International (or SDCC for short), the mother of all comic book (and sci-fi...and film...and manga...and...and...) conventions. This year, we went in with one goal in mind: introduce the world to DC Super-Pets! And introduce them we did: by Friday afternoon, we had sold out almost all of our inventory. The verdict: people, young and old, want more pets!! Lucky for them we’ll be rolling out twelve more DC Super-Pets titles by next year’s con, giving our loyal customers a total of twenty-four to choose from.
Here are a few pics from the con:
Our booth, shortly after set-up. Notice the spinner rack full of Super-Pets books on the right side, which hearkens back to a time when you could buy comics off a spinner rack at your local drug store or convenience mart. It proved to be a huge draw for us!
To help promote the launch of DC Super-Pets, we raffled off this gorgeous framed print, signed by artist Art Baltazar. Nearly 500 attendees entered the drawing!
On Saturday, Art Baltazar was kind enough to stop by our booth and sign Super-Pets books for an hour. This is significant because just the night before, Art won his second Eisner Award (the “Oscars of Comics”) for his work on Tiny Titans, published by DC Comics. In other words, he is in high demand and we are very proud and lucky to have him working on our books!
Here’s Art drawing a sketch of Streaky the Super-Cat for a cat-loving attendee.
Finally, what Comic Con would be complete without attendees wearing outrageously good costumes?? I took advantage of the situation and grabbed a few snapshots in our booth, which I affectionately named my “Booth Photo Series”:
Darth Vader!
Jango Fett and a librarian who isn’t about to let him pillage her beloved Capstone books!
Rapunzel, who was nice enough to let down her hair next to our Rapunzel poster!
And finally, we had a VERY special guest come by our booth on Sunday to put the finishing touches on a very successful show: Krypto the Super-Dog!
Even Krypto likes a tummy rub now and again!
Up, up, and away! See you next year, San Diego!!
