National Parent's Day is the perfect holiday to celebrate time with your parents, children, foster parent or role model. I love this holiday. Having a single parent household can make it difficult for a child to cope with Mother's Day and Father's Day as separate entities. Many children are raised by foster parents, grandparents or a single parent. This wonderful holiday encompasses all family dynamics. I think it's well past time we acknowledged parenting, and the parent-child relationship goes beyond a mother/father dynamic. Every family is unique. No child or parent should be made to feel left out of this celebration.
The simplest way to share with the child in your life? Read together. Share your favorite books. Discuss what makes each title so special. Point out the pictures and make up your own story. Listening and sharing your idea's about reading is the perfect way to connect with your child and will encourage a life long love of reading. Not only because the books you share are amazing, but because it will always be time you've spent together.
If you happen to be in a less conventional family unit, you might want to check out What Is a Family? by Rebecca Rissman. This title uses simple language and global photographs to discuss the role of adoptive parents, foster parents, grandparents and traditional parents place in a family.
