This Friday I will be presenting ath the MNAEYC/MNSACA conference in St. Paul. My presentation is about technology and young children...Is technology really appropriate for the early learning classroom? Of course I have read a lot about the topic, but I'm not an expert. Capstone has three amazing products that I think are appropriate for use in any classroom: myON Reader, Capstone Interactive Library and PebbleGo.
There are simple guidelines suggested by Lisa Guernsey, author of Screen Time that help determine if the product is appropriate for children. She calls it the Three C's: 1. Content. (yes, content matters! Is it appropriate for the child's age?) 2. Context. (where does the technology fit in your day?) and 3. the Child.(Is he/she engaged with what is on the screen?). Once you've considered the three C's, there's lots of ideas on what to do!
Maupin House, our new sister company, has a great book called Digital Tools for Teaching. It discusses how to use digital tools for middle school teachers. I used it to pull together ideas for my presentation even though I'm presenting for teachers of much younger students. It has some great ideas that are easy to adapt to the age group you are engaged with.
Do you have some great ideas on how to use technology with young children? Send them my way if you do!
