There are some people in this world who are simply good at making time to read. Several of my coworkers, for example, and a couple of my good friends. No one is better at making time to read than my dear dad, however. When he’s not catching up on the news or working, my dad can be found, book in hand, at a variety of his favorite reading spots. Not counting sleeping-time, I’d be willing to bet that his weekends consist of probably fifty percent reading-time.
When I was a kid, I took after my dad in this regard. These days, I feel like I’m letting him down, rarely making time to read. For instance, I’ve been really into podcasts lately, and instead of reading, I listen to them while doing things around my apartment.
I know, I know, this is a shameful thing to admit for someone who works in the book trade — not reading for pleasure. It’s not that I don’t enjoy reading. It’s just that I’ve gotten into certain habits. If I tried harder to make time to read, I’m sure I could. Instead of watching a TV episode before bed, I could read a few chapters of a book. Instead of scanning the news headlines on my phone while eating lunch, I could take out a magazine and read an article. And yes, instead of fiddling about my apartment while listening to podcasts, I could sit down for twenty minutes and read.
Lucky for me, National Readathon Day is tomorrow, January 24th. Nothing like a reading holiday to give me a good kick in the rear! #timetoread
Happy reading!
